This event presents the first screening of Movable Type; Under Erasure a new film by artist Karen Cunningham commissioned by Legion TV. Filmed largely on location at Writing-on-Stone, Canada the work features an original monologue written and read by the eminent theorist and cultural critic Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. This event will also include screenings of work by Adam Chodzko and Susan Schuppli selected by Cunningham and a discussion led by artist and writer Gary Zhexi Zhang. An accompanying essay written by Gary Zhexi Zhang in response to the film will be available at the event.

Karen Cunningham is a Glasgow-based artist whose practice reflects a phenomenological relationship with technology. Working across sculpture, moving image and photography she explores the overlapping of residual and emergent identities, cultures and technologies. Her moving image works have been shown nationally and internationally including screenings at the ICA, London; CCA, Glasgow and the Malmö Konsthall, Sweden and previous films have been commissioned by Collective Gallery and LUX. Solo shows have included Plasma at Walden Affairs, The Hague and Fib at Collective Gallery, Edinburgh and forthcoming projects include a three-person show at VBKÖ Vienna, Austria and a group exhibition as part of the Shanghai Biennale.

Adam Chodzko is an artist interested in human behaviour. He works across media, ranging from large-scale installations to de-materialised interventions. Exploring the poetic spaces between documentary and fantasy, conceptualism and surrealism, public and private, Chodzko’s work examines and provokes our collective imagination by wondering how, through the visual, we might best understand and re-form our encounters with the society and environment that surround us. He has been exhibited extensively in international solo and group exhibitions including: Tate Britain, Tate St. Ives; Raven Row, Museo d'Arte Moderna, Bologna (MAMBo); Istanbul Biennale; and Venice Biennale. He is the recipient of awards from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and The Foundation for Contemporary Arts and was shortlisted for the 2015 Jarman Award.

Susan Schuppli is an artist and researcher based in London and a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths. Her research practice examines media artefacts that emerge out of sites of contemporary conflict and state violence to ask questions about the ways in which media are enabling or limiting the possibility of transformative politics. Her work been exhibited throughout Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions include Casino Luxembourg, Extra City Antwerp, Stroom Den Haag, Shanghai Biennale, Charlottenborg, Galerie Wedding, Witte de With, Fundacion Proa and Bildmuseet Sweden. She has published widely within the context of media and politics and is author of the book, Material Witness (MIT Press, 2015), which is also the subject of an experimental documentary.

Gary Zhexi Zhang is a writer and artist, whose work is concerned with private and political narratives of the digital. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and University of Cambridge, and is a staff contributor to Frieze magazine. He is currently interested in touch, slime moulds and the Chinese Internet. Recent exhibitions include Tenderflix Futures at ICA, London and Would you like help? at EMBASSY Gallery, Edinburgh.
