Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? is an ongoing project by Ricardo Basbaum involving the circulation of a painted steel object, a multiple with more than 20 copies, around the world each hosted by individuals or groups for a period of time (around one month). Participants make use of the object for their own experimental project, which is documented and added to the Would you like…? growing archive,
www.nbp.pro.br.
In January 2010 The Showroom invited artists to realise their own micro works with the object, with the request that projects take place in the neighbourhood. These local interventions were presented during a Round Table Discussion on 8 April with invited specialists from the field of collaborative participatory practice.
[small operatic event]
5 August 2010, 6.30 – 8.30pm
In August 2010 The Showroom presents [small operatic event], a collective performance by Brazilian artist Ricardo Basbaum in collaboration with Dance Physics and musician Bruce Nockles.
The collective performance will present several actions that depart from the participation of Dance Physics and Joyce Gyimah in the Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? project. The evening will include dance performance (Dance Physics), readings (Ricardo Basbaum) and live music (Bruce Nockles). On one of the gallery walls a diagram will be displayed, specially designed for the event and composed of texts from the project and script lines read at the event.
Dance Physics has been working with the object for the past 4 months to create a performance which was shown at the Church Street Festival on 4 July 2010. Dance Physics will also create a dance inspired by Basbaum’s work on 5 August with young people from the Church Street neighbourhood.
Ricardo Basbaum (1961) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. His works deals with notions of transformation, subliminal contact, the organic line, contact zones, micro-perception, repetition and the politics of the subject.
Dance Physics is directed by Joyce Gyimah and exists to contribute to dance education and performance. Musician Bruce Nockles has been active in contemporary music in a wide variety of roles, as performer, conductor, composer, improviser and educator. He was a member of Ensemble Modern and plays regularly with the London Sinfonietta. He is currently writing a piece for “Bella Tromba”.
This project is the second commission within Communal Knowledge, a pilot programme of participatory projects which is generously supported by The Paul Hamlyn Foundation and The John Lyon’s Charity.
