Made with volunteers from the Merseyside village of Hale, Childe of Hale (2014, video, 25 mins) tells the story of John Middleton, the famous 9 ft. 3 giant known as 'The Childe of Hale', born there in 1578.
Using improvised acting and DIY methods, the film explores the flexibility of this under-documented historical narrative and encompasses several versions of Middleton's biography, as interpreted by people from the village.
Richard Whitby: Childe of Hale is funded by Arts Council England.
