Grace Schwindt: Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society

2014–2015

London-based German artist Grace Schwindt's feature length film Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society is her most ambitious production and our largest film production to date.

Nine partners, three of whom are international, were involved in the commissioning of the film and it toured to eight venues, with bespoke installations at each venue.

During her exhibition at The Showroom, Schwindt held an in conversation on the project with Martin Hargreaves, Programme Leader, MA The Body in Performance at Trinity Laban.

Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society was very positively reviewed in Frieze and presented at Art Basel Unlimited in June 2015.

To coincide with the Basel exhibition, The Showroom launched Schwindt's first ever limited edition print, Tall Man, which is based on a costume design from the film.

Grace Schwindt: Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society is commissioned by FLAMIN Productions through Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; Eastside Projects, Birmingham and The Showroom, London in association with Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts, Bath; Site Gallery, Sheffield; Tramway, Glasgow and Zeno X Gallery, Antwerp.
