2009–2011
Cinenova is a volunteer-run, charitable organisation dedicated to preserving and distributing the work of women/feminist film and video makers.
This project was organised by Cinenova's working group with the aim of promoting the work in the Cinenova collection while making public the challenges of collective cultural work, specifically the practicalities and labour involved in maintaining the organisation.
Centred around an exhibition displaying films, videos and other archive material, the project was enriched by an intensive programme of screenings and events that offered visitors the opportunity to see pivotal works from the history of feminist, black, queer and experimental film and video, and to together consider how they activate the present.
The Showroom currently hosts Cinenova's digital archive and Now Showing, a monthly screening programme that intends to materialise relationships between contemporary artist moving image practice and the feminist and organising legacies present in the Cinenova collection.
Reproductive Labour was supported by Arts Council England and the additional generosity of Cinenova's supporters.
