Artists’ Union England is the first trade union in England for visual and applied artists, since the dissolution of The Artists' Union in 1984.
The event will open with artist Angela Kennedy (Chair of Artists’ Union England) giving an introductory talk about the Union. This will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the following issues:
- precarity as a condition
- the internalisation of pressure to work for free
- the importance of a trade union and the necessity of a culture change in terms of paying artists
- collectivity, sustainability and resilience
Panel members include Janna Graham (Projects Curator at Serpentine Gallery and Bectu representative), Russell Martin (ArtQuest), Dr Emily Amal Porter (Artists’ Union England trustee) and members of the Precarious Workers Brigade. The discussion will be hosted by Katriona Beales (Artists’ Union England founding member) and will be followed by an opportunity for audience Q&A. As part of the evening, poet Angela Chicken will perform.
Donations are welcome on the night to support the development of Artists’ Union England.
